Billboard Music Awards 2013: The Stunning, The Blah, and The Plain Outrageous

If there is anything we can say about last Sunday’s 2013 Billboard Music Awards, it is that the fashion was outrageous. And to illustrate our point, may we direct your attention back to singer Z Lala. At one point we were thinking, was she trying to pull a Lady Gaga? And then later we settled on maybe no one told the poor girl that Christmas was five months ago, otherwise we’re sure she would’ve changed from her Christmas adornment-inspired outfit to something more appropriate for an awards night that’s held in May. Also, is anyone else wondering how she sat through more than two hours in this, errr, costume?

Maybe the look that Z Lala was really going for is that of newly-confirmed X Factor USA judge Kelly Rowland who was outrageously stunning in a silver Rami Al Ali dress to present the Dance Artist of the Year award alongside Austin Mahone.

Question: We love Madonna, but why doesn’t she wear pants anymore? She has so much money to buy all the clothes she could ever want, and yet, on two big nights (the MET Gala and now the Billboard Music Awards), she chose to show up sans the pants. Why?

Channeling Challenging Madge in a lingerie-exposure duel is Once Upon A Time actress Jennifer Morrison. Again, why?

Finally! Someone thinks showing off your undergarments in the red blue carpet is outrageous. Wait, what? She showed up without one instead? Uh, that’s not quite what we meant. And wait, why did someone bring a dog?

That’s right, tell them off J.Lo. Tell them in another of your cut-to-there ensemble. Lest anyone forget that you’re practically the queen mother of this red carpet trend.

Just when we thought we’d seen so much skin for one night, Ke$ha walked the blue carpet in a side bum-baring Givenchy LBD. We have to say though that before we got distracted and bummed out (pun intended) by the side slit, we actually thought this was the best the singer looked, what with the slick back pony and barely there makeup.

After Ke$ha walked in, we just threw our hands in surrender and accepted that the night’s dress code was to dress as little as possible. But then came Hayden Panettiere in her halter gown with a tier-layered bodice. We had to stand up and give the Nashville star a slow clap for her refined and sophisticated look.

All that actress Alyssa Milano must have just wanted was to look very much on-trend. So she put on her little white dress, looked at herself in the mirror and thought, “Not on-trend enough.” So she slipped on a pair of sheer trousers and thought, “Perfect.” NOT.

What is perfect though is Kimberly Perry’s (of The Band Perry) embellished top and full ivory skirt.

Aside from The Mistresses actress, Alyssa Milano, another example of how overdoing current trends could work against you is singer Carly Rae Jepsen who mixed strategically-placed mesh patchworks with her sheer mini with side sashes. Toomuchgoingonwedon’tevenknowwheretostart. You know what we mean?

Carly Rae should have called Icona Pop, maybe? The open back floor-length lace gown and sheer knee-length dress with beaded accents that the Swedish DJ duo wore to the blue carpet? We Love It!

Crop top. Sparkly Tom Ford maxi skirt. Stiletto ankle boots. Worn separately, these items could have been part of what would be a rocking music awards red carpet ensemble. But together, even on Jenny McCarthy, they spell outrageous disaster.

If Jenny McCarthy was just looking for something she could showcase her amazing bod with, perhaps she should have a little talk with Selena Gomez who seems to be having a very sexy, and still very spot-on style streak in the red carpet recently.

You know how we often see photos of celebrities running errands ’round town, shopping, grabbing some eats? Well, if not for the backdrop and the deliberate pose for the camera, we would have thought this pic of Audrina Patridge, in a ruffled leather mini skirt and gold mesh top, was of her going out to do any of those things and not attend a red carpet event.

Okay, get this. The 22 singer won Artist of the Year, Top Billboard 20 Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Country Artist, Top Digital Songs Artist, and her song We Are Never, Ever Getting Back Together was named Top Country Song. So of course, if you, like Taylor, knew well ahead that you had a really good chance to be going back and forth the stage to claim all those awards, then you would also show up in your sparkly best.

What about you Coco Fashionistas? Who make up your list of best and worst dressed for this year’s Billboard Music Awards? Before we end though, we leave you with Miley Cyrus and her Balmain crochet jumpsuit with check details. We aren’t really digging it but we also know if there is someone who could dare pull off an outrageous outfit such as this, it would be Miley.
